Sometimes I realize I'm only skimming the surface of life.
I do what I can, what I should, what I ought to, and what I want to do each day. I try to take care of what's in front of me each week. Then the next week begins, and the cycle starts all over again.
The weeks become months, the months become years, and one day I find myself sitting at my computer wondering, Where did the time go?
But is life really about making it through another day, week, or month?
Of course not.
God is always at work—in us, around us, and through us. He is constantly inviting us to notice what He's doing, to understand His purposes, and to join Him in them. He doesn't simply want life to happen to us; He wants us to experience the life He is creating through us.
As we seek first His Kingdom, God gradually opens our eyes to what's really happening beneath the surface. We begin to recognize His fingerprints in our circumstances, our relationships, and even our struggles.
Jesus told His disciples that He no longer called them servants, but friends, because He was making known to them everything He received from the Father (John 15:15). What an amazing invitation! God doesn't simply give us assignments—He shares His heart with us.
Paul echoes this truth in 1 Corinthians 2:12:
"We have received...the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us."
Your entire life is a gift from God, and through His Spirit He wants to help you understand it from His perspective. He is your Teacher, Counselor, and Guide.
Here are a few simple ways to move beyond the daily treadmill and become more aware of what God is doing:
1. Step off the treadmill each day.
Take time to slow down and reflect with God. Ask Him, "What are You doing in my life today? What are You trying to teach me?"
2. Spend time in Scripture.
God uses His Word to shape our thinking and reveal His ways—not just to address today's problems, but to prepare us for tomorrow's opportunities.
Have you spent time reading God's Word this week?
3. Rely on the Holy Spirit.
Invite Him to guide, counsel, teach, and empower you. Don't depend only on your own wisdom or abilities.
Have you recently thanked the Holy Spirit for His presence and guidance?
4. Put into practice what God teaches you.
Truth isn't meant only to be understood—it is meant to be lived. Share what you're learning and allow it to shape the way you live.
What has God been teaching you this week? Have you shared it with anyone?
5. Remember that God is building others through you.
As He strengthens and matures you, He also wants to use you to encourage, equip, and build up the people around you. That's part of what He's doing "around here."
Who have you strengthened spiritually this week?
Life is about so much more than getting through another week. Every day is an invitation to walk with God, learn from Him, and participate in what He is doing. Don't settle for skimming the surface when He is inviting you into the depths.
