The Point and Power of Pausing

When Life Turns Up the Pressure

What do you do when you feel the pressure closing in?

Do you double down—determined to push harder until things finally give way? Or do you pull back—hoping that if you wait it out, the heat will die down on its own? In other words, when stress hits, do you tend to fight or take flight?

We all have natural reactions to pressure. The key is knowing what yours is—and learning when it helps and when it hurts. Sometimes our first response fits the moment. But other times, it’s just instinct taking over, not wisdom leading the way.

The truth is, when pressure and quick reactions mix, things often go poorly.

  • If you’re a fighter, remember that moving too fast can land you in trouble. Proverbs 19:2 says, “Desire without knowledge is not good—how much more will hasty feet miss the way!” In other words, rushing ahead can leave you with regrets—a commitment you can’t keep, a word you can’t take back, or a problem that just got bigger.

  • If you’re a flighter, keep in mind that you can’t win a battle by running from it. Fear feels safe for a moment, but it rarely leads to peace. It usually just delays the breakthrough God wants to give you.

Pressure is part of life, and it’s not going anywhere. If anything, it’s increasing. Our world feels like it’s spinning faster—climate shifts, new technologies, social divides, health scares, and global tension. The question isn’t if you’ll face pressure, but how you’ll handle it when it comes.

Hebrews 12 tells us that “everything that can be shaken will be shaken.” The temporary stuff won’t last—but the Kingdom of God will. (Hebrews 12:28) That means even when life feels unstable, we don’t have to be. We belong to something unshakable.

So we can be thankful—even in the middle of the storm.
Thankful that God is still in control.
Thankful that He gives wisdom when we ask. (James 1:5)
Thankful that our lives are held in His hands and that He will carry us all the way through—aging, loss, wars, worries, and whatever else comes—into eternal life with Him.

So next time you feel the pressure building—pause. Take a breath. Then worship.

Lift your focus from the problem to the One who holds it all together. “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

Don’t stay stuck in fear or frustration. Instead, steady your heart on the One who can’t be shaken. Let Him lead you through the pressure. Your anxiety won’t fix the problem—but your worship will move heaven and bring peace to your soul.

With you,
