Have you ever had the privilege of learning from someone who truly inspired you? Maybe it was a coach, a teacher, a manager, or a mentor—someone who not only taught you a skill, but shaped how you see the world. And maybe you were even invited to actually work alongside them. What an incredible opportunity! You got to see them up close: how they prepared, how they practiced, how they carried themselves. Maybe you even had the chance to share life beyond the lessons—to become friends.
But then, came the moment: they turned to you and said, “Now it's your turn.”
For many of us, that moment is both thrilling and terrifying. We doubt ourselves. We wonder, Am I really ready for this? And yet, somehow, we step into it. Shaky at first, but we grow and begin to walk in the ways of our mentor. Eventually, we even find ourselves looking for someone we can pour into—just as someone once did for us.
This is exactly the kind of transition the disciples faced in their time with Jesus.
His ministry was gaining momentum. Crowds were gathering from all directions, drawn by His words and His miraculous power. The disciples were right in the middle of it all—watching, learning, even participating. But one day, Jesus pulled them aside, took them up on a mountainside, and shared something that must have surprised them.
“You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world.”
(Matthew 5:13–16)
In the original Greek, the emphasis is unmistakable—YOU. It’s as if Jesus was saying, “You’ve seen Me do these things. You’ve done them with Me. Now, it’s your turn. YOU live it. YOU do it.”
Can you imagine how that felt? Exciting? Yes. But also sobering—even frightening. They knew their strengths and their failures. And yet, Jesus wasn’t just giving them a pep talk. He was commissioning them. Soon, He would be gone, and they would be His presence in the world.
But they weren’t left alone. The Holy Spirit filled them—empowered them. And what was true for them then is still true for us now.
You are the salt.
You are the light.
This is your calling.
You carry the flavor of heaven into the world. You reflect the light of God’s truth and hope. So ask yourself: Is my life seasoned with grace? Is my light shining clearly?
Maybe your light feels a little dim lately. Maybe the salt within you has settled and needs a good shake. This is a perfect time to ask God for renewal. Let Him stir fresh faith in you again.
And then—get into the mix of life. Salt and light are only effective when they’re applied. God often places YOU right at the crossroads of people and divine purpose.
So go for it.
Serve.
Love.
Speak truth.
Jesus is with you—and yes, He’s counting on YOU.
With you,
~ Coach Tom
