We need to be careful not to confuse busyness with effectiveness.Being effective isn’t about doing as many things as possible. It’s about doing the right things—and doing them well. Jesus was incredibly effective, yet He rarely seemed rushed, distracted, or driven by the demands of everyone around Him.
Jesus told us to “seek first” God’s kingdom and His righteousness, with the promise that the other “things” we need will be given to us as well (Matthew 6:33). He also warned that “life’s worries, riches and pleasures” can keep us from growing spiritually (Luke 8).
The challenge is learning to give God our first attention and our highest priorities. As we do that, He can guide us in how we order the rest of our lives. When we trust Him, our lives can become both abundant and effective—empowered by the Holy Spirit rather than driven by our own efforts.
One helpful way to evaluate our lives is to look at what is actually driving our activities. The answers may help us see where some adjustments are needed.
Do the needs, requests, and ideas of other people pretty much determine your schedule?
If you’re a responsible and capable person, it’s easy for others to see that they can accomplish a lot by involving you. Before long, you may find yourself extremely busy simply because there is always something—or someone—that needs your attention.
But being needed isn’t necessarily the same as being called.
You can have a very full schedule and still be unsure whether you’re actually doing what God has asked you to do.
How much of your life is spent simply doing what you want to do—or wishing you had more freedom to do it?
Are your dreams, goals, and plans built primarily around your own desires?
There’s nothing wrong with having dreams, enjoying life, or making plans. But if our desires are the main thing directing our lives, we may find ourselves doing many things—and even enjoying them—without knowing whether they fit with God’s purposes for us.
If you love God, then your life needs to make room for seeking His direction.
What does His Word say about the decisions you’re facing? Are you seeking wise and godly counsel from others? Are you taking time to listen to God and consider what His priorities might be for your life right now?
These questions help us move from simply asking, “What do I want to do?” or “What needs to be done?” to asking, “God, what do You want me to do?”
That change in perspective can make all the difference.
When we seek God’s direction FIRST, He will lead us through all the “things” of life. We may discover that we don’t need to carry quite so much, accomplish quite so much, or worry quite so much.
Our lives may become less cluttered with busyness—and more filled with purpose, peace, and the things that truly matter.
