Reflection and Action: A Rhythm for Spiritual Growth

When was the last time you simply spent time with the Lord—not reading for information, not asking Him to do something, but just talking with Him, listening, and seeking His counsel for your life? Isn’t that what it really means to seek Him? (Psalm 27:8; Psalm 105:4)

I am convinced that one of the greatest ways to grow in wisdom and in the counsel of the Lord is through reflection with Him. In those quiet moments, we become more aware of His presence, hear His voice more clearly, and grow in spiritual authority as we learn to obey what He shows us.

Someone once said, “Action without reflection is meaningless action.” In the same way, reflection with the Lord—anchored in His Word—gives us divine perspective. As we consider our lives in His presence, the Holy Spirit teaches us (John 14:26). We begin to see ourselves more clearly and discover how to live practically in His Kingdom.

But here’s the key: reflection is not about self-evaluation or “producing a better version” of ourselves. Its true aim is deeper relationship with the Lord and a more obedient response to His counsel.

A Simple Rhythm of Reflection: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

If you don’t know where to start, here’s a simple practice that can take just a few minutes a day:

1. Yesterday – Review
Look back over the last day (or several days). Think through situations, encounters, and conversations. Where was God at work? What might He want to show you? Ask for His counsel, and jot down any insights.

2. Today – Preview
Consider your plans for the day ahead. Imagine the situations you’ll step into. Ask God for wisdom, guidance, and an awareness of His presence as you move through them.

3. Tomorrow – Envision
Look ahead—whether it’s to the literal tomorrow, the coming week, or your long-term goals. Invite God into your hopes and plans. Ask Him to shape your perspective and guide your steps.

This “Review and Preview” practice can transform your spiritual life. It opens space for God’s Spirit to form you more into the likeness of Christ.

Reflection + Action = Transformation

Action without reflection is empty. But reflection without action is equally hollow. Together, reflection and action create the rhythm of true growth and real life in the Kingdom of God.

So pause for a moment. Be still before the Lord. Might He be calling you to begin a new rhythm of reflection with Him? Take a step—write down a plan, set aside a time, and invite Him to shape this practice in your life.

With you,
