Trust, Align, Rest

What Are You Looking For When You Come to the Lord?

When you come to the Lord, what are you really looking for?
What do you hope to receive from Him?

Relief? Direction? Provision? Peace?

Those are all natural things to seek. But David shows us a deeper perspective.

When David came to the Lord, he wasn’t simply looking for answers—he was seeking more of God Himself. Again and again in the Psalms we see the longing and motivation of his heart.

Psalm 4, in particular, gives us a glimpse into a way of approaching God that can shape our own souls.

“Know that the Lord has set apart His faithful servant for Himself; the Lord hears when I call to Him.” (v. 3)
Faithfulness deepens intimacy. As we walk consistently with the Lord, we begin to live with quiet assurance: He hears us. He is involved. We are not overlooked. We belong to Him.

“Tremble and do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent.” (v. 4)
Still your heart. Reflect regularly- even nightly. Pay attention to your anger and frustrations. Bring them honestly before the Lord. Unresolved anger hardens into bitterness; bitterness can grow into rage. But when we process our emotions with God, our hearts stay soft and responsive.

“Offer the sacrifices of the righteous and trust in the Lord.” (v. 5)
Offer yourself—along with the outcomes of your life—to Him. This is a lifestyle of trust. It is not passive or fatalistic. Trust is agreement. It means aligning our intentions and actions with His will and purposes.

Our role is not to force our own way forward, but to respond to His way.

Trust.
Agreement with His leading.
Alignment.
Action.
Reflection.
Recalibration.

This is the rhythm of a surrendered life.

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” (v. 8)
You may not be surrounded by peace, but the Prince of Peace dwells within you. Each night is an opportunity to submit your past, present, and future to Him—whether your to-do list is complete or your conflicts are resolved or not.

Peace does not have to be circumstantial; it can be internal.
Your eternal safety rests in His hands.

“The Lord has set apart His faithful servant for Himself.”
He is your purpose and your reward.
He is your peace and your safety.

Isaiah echoes this same invitation:
“Why spend money (or prayers) on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? … Give ear and come to Me; listen, that you may have life.” (Isaiah 55:2–3)

So again, what are you looking for when you come to the Lord?

Let’s take time to intentionally focus our lives on Jesus—believing that He will direct, provide, and reward us according to His deepest, richest, and most fulfilling will.

With you,
