I often hear people say they want to hear from God—that they long to know what He wants them to do. I smile when I hear this because I understand the desire. We tend to assume that if we just knew God’s will, life would be easier. But the truth is, clarity rarely makes things simple.
We hope. We pray. We wait. We wonder if we’ll ever truly sense His leading. And then—eventually—God makes His will known. But when He does, it’s not uncommon to feel caught off guard. Despite all the waiting and preparing, we often feel completely unprepared. Not only that, we may face an unexpected crisis of faith. We start to doubt: Is this really from God? What if I’ve misunderstood? What if I fail?
That moment of hesitation isn’t always about lack of faith. Often, it’s fear of failure. Deep down, we want God’s will to come with guarantees—of success, of smooth roads, of minimal pain. But that’s not how it works.
Look at Scripture. The lives of those who followed God were filled with struggle: setbacks, redirections, waiting, pain, and sometimes even apparent failure. Obedience to God always involves risk. The possibility of failure or suffering is not a sign we’ve misunderstood Him—it’s often part of the cost.
So here’s a question:
Are you more committed to obeying God, or to succeeding in life with the least possible pain or embarrassment?
When God reveals His will—whether it involves a relationship, a job, an act of service, a habit to start or one to break—the real test begins. Once we believe He’s spoken, we have to begin reshaping our lives in response. And that’s hard. Making changes, repenting, turning around—it’s never easy. It requires grace, strength, and a willingness to grow.
The road to obedience is rarely straight. It’s uphill, winding, and filled with obstacles. It will likely demand more than you feel you can give. And yet—God walks that road with us. He is far more concerned with the condition of our hearts and our willingness to follow than with outward measures of success. Through obedience, we grow—spiritually and personally.
Rather than focus on a single verse today, reflect on the life of a biblical or spiritual hero who inspires you. Think about the path of obedience they walked. Was it easy? Did it come without cost?
This is your opportunity to renew your own commitment to follow the Lord—not just when the way is clear, but also when the way is hard. Let go of the illusion that following God should be easy. Even Jesus' life wasn’t easy. But it was full of purpose, joy, and deep fulfillment. And so it will be for us—if we follow Him, wherever He leads.
With you,
