The Heart of True Intimacy

When people begin dating, they often feel a surge of inner angst: “Will I be accepted? Will my invitation be well received?” These questions reach deeper than romance—they touch our sense of identity, self-worth, and lovability. In response, we’re tempted to show only our best parts, carefully curating ourselves to be acceptable—maybe even creating a false self in order to “catch” the other person.

The same temptation can creep into our relationship with God. If we’re not sure of His utterly unconditional love, we may try to hide the “unpresentable” parts of ourselves or craft a “religious” version of who we think we should be. But these paths are spiritually deadly. They keep us from experiencing the authentic, transforming love of God and leave us stuck in a shallow faith.

Yet Scripture is clear: God calls us to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Luke 10:27). Real love means bringing every part of ourselves—not just the polished or presentable parts—into a full, mutual relationship. Only then can we experience true connection.

We know how this works with people. When we sense that someone is holding back, we instinctively do the same. We protect ourselves. But this mutual guardedness keeps both parties from really knowing or being known.

God is different. He has already given His whole self to us. In Jesus, He revealed His heart, mind, soul, and strength—showing His vulnerability in being misunderstood, beaten, and killed on a cross, and showing His strength in rising from the dead to offer forgiveness and life. He holds nothing back.

And now He invites you to do the same. Not just your “good” parts. Not just what feels safe. But everything—your fears, your shame, your hidden struggles, your hopes, your dreams. He longs for the real you.

Can you believe that His love is big enough for all of you? Can you trust Him enough to bring your whole self to Him—your brokenness, your questions, your weakness—as well as your worship? This is the heart of intimacy with God: bringing all of you to all of Him, and receiving His love, forgiveness, insight, healing, and power in return.

So pause and ask yourself:

  • How much of yourself are you willing to bring to Him?

  • How much of Him are you willing to receive?

  • How deep do you want this connection to go?

    With you,
