So, you want to hear God’s voice—now what?
The first and most honest question to ask yourself is this: Am I willing to obey what I believe God is saying to me?
This is a crucial starting point. A genuine “yes” is not the outcome of hearing God’s voice; it is the precondition. A willingness to obey creates the soil in which discernment can grow.
Jesus once asked His followers, “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46). His words are sobering. If we consistently ignore what God makes clear, we begin to live as though He is not truly Lord. Over time, something subtle but serious happens: our ability to hear dulls. Our spiritual sensitivity fades. It’s much like slowly losing your native language after living for years in a place where it’s never spoken.
As followers of Christ, we are invited to receive His direction above every competing voice and opinion. When we sense that God is leading, our posture matters. Let’s receive His word thoughtfully—and then implement it intentionally.
Once the issue of obedience is settled at a foundational level, the next step is openness. Open yourself to the many ways God may choose to lead you—and don’t be afraid. Jesus reassures us: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you… Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?” (Luke 11:9–11). God is a good Father. He is not trying to confuse or trick His children.
You don’t need to fear being deceived at every turn. Stay rooted in relationship—with God and with other believers. Invite wise, trusted voices into the process. Discernment is rarely meant to be practiced in isolation.
God may speak through Scripture, prayer, circumstances, the words of others, inner impressions, or even dreams and visions. Rather than narrowing our expectations, why not grow in our ability to recognize Him in all of these ways? When we seek God’s leading with hearts already inclined toward obedience, we often find that His voice becomes clearer and more frequent.
Life with God becomes less about guessing and more about walking—step by step—with Jesus. Along the way, we discover fellow travelers who are moving in the same direction. Faith becomes active, relational, and alive.
So, will you say yes to God’s voice today?
Are you willing to receive His guidance through fresh and varied ways?
And will you share—humbly and honestly—with others what you’re hearing and how you’re responding?
That’s where the journey deepens.
With you,
~ Coach Tom
