There are so many things vying for our attention these days – ads, shows, tasks, roles, assignments, relationships.
There are also many voices – family, friends, workmates, God, conscience, self and the enemy.
Does anything or anyone really get your attention anymore?
Whatever gets your attention gets you.
With all the clammer, it is most important to give your attention is God –His voice is even more important than your own.
God is the Creator, Sustainer and the Interpreter of all things. He is life itself. We are all accountable to Him, whether we recognize Him or not. Our identity, worth and purpose are derived from Him. We must remind each other and encourage each other in this truth consistently.
In Christ we have been spiritually “raised” to understand the will and voice of God. We must give Him our attention. We are encouraged to “Set our hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God … to set our minds on things above, not on earthly things.” (Colossians 3:1-2)
“We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:18)
If we give attention to spiritual things we will “get” spiritual insight and participate in spiritual activity. Focusing our attention, learning about life from a spiritual perspective is not enough, however. We must learn to pray the Kingdom and will of God onto the earth (as it is in heaven).
Yet, we must not stop at prayer. We must also speak about those heavenly things that are attracting our attention. Then the things that are getting our attention begin to vie for the attention of others through us. Our words and prayer can shift the atmosphere and attention in our environment. If we don’t speak – no heavenly invitation or insight will compete for the minds of those around us. The Kingdom of God advances through our words.
As we speak we must make sure we are making effort to apply what we are learning. We want to exercise our understanding before we share with others. We need God’s to help to implement His Kingdom ways as we speak and share with others.
May you give your primary attention to the Kingdom of God.
In the process, may you give God more and more of yourself and your obedience.
May you be bold to speak of the heavenly things that are receiving your attention.
