Navigating God's Purpose and Your Desires

Can you articulate some of the primary needs, desires and burdens that you are carrying these days?

God wants you to express, to Him, the things are important to you.   He is often more interested in our needs than we realize.  You may not have what you want “Because you don’t ask God.” (James 4:2)

Our desires can become problematic, however.  When we become obsessed with our “stuff,” when our concerns become too much of a priority, they can become toxic and destructive to our souls.  Our wishes may seem harmless at first, but as they become a fixation in our lives, they begin to diminish our world.  It is as if can only see the object of our obsession. God wants to raise our eyes.

1 Kings speaks of a widow who, along with her son, was starving . She was about to prepare her last meal for the two of them when she met the prophet Elijah. He said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do what you have [planned]. But first make a small cake of bread for me and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord gives rain on the land.’” (1 Kings 17:13-14)

Elijah saw her great need, but he called her to take a step of faith. He called her to lift her eyes from herself and her dire circumstances for a moment. He asked her to believe that God would provide for her and to demonstrate her faith in His prophetic word by serving Him first.

Our desires and perspectives may be good and appropriate, but they can become lethal if they become our fixation.  When we give our desires first place in our lives they become idols. God’s purposes and even His power will then begin to drain away from us. We can become as small as an unfulfilled yearning. God’s love and resources for you are not diminishing; they are renewed every day. They are found in Him; not in our obsession with our need.

Jesus made it clear that your heavenly Father knows what we need. Yet, He said, “But first seek His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)  When we place God in the central place of priority in our lives, He releases His care and provision in tangible ways.

You may have many concerns in your life, but first direct yourself to God and what He is highlighting.  Make sure that He is always first.

Is there anything that you need to move to the side in order place God first today?
Please do so and then declare His centrality as an act of worship.  You may be shocked at the changes that you experience.
