How to Build a Good Name

“Where’d all the good people go?” That’s a question singer song writer, Jack Johnson, asked in his 2005 hit song, “Good People.” It seems that media has so highlighted dysfunctional, rebellious and selfish lifestyles that we may be forgetting what solid living looks like. Men and women are finding it difficult to find good people to date; some are getting frustrated and others are getting scared. Where’d all he good people go?

We all have our faults and areas of brokenness. However, we must choose to live with some bedrock values. Solomon mentions two such values in Proverbs 3:3-4, “Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.”

They may not get many hits or views on YouTube, but love and faithfulness go a long way in real life. To love others is to treat them as God would treat them – with honor, care and connection. To love others is to express and serve God’s best to them. It is to value others above yourself, and to care about their concerns. (Philippians 2:3-4)

Loving others also involves taking the time necessary to make fresh connection with them. If we know, honor and serve others – they will feel loved. Faithfulness is an expression of follow-through. Oh, how we need faithfulness these days. It means being true to your word, doing what you say you will do, and being committed to bring that promise and/or action to completion.

People want to be known and accepted as they really are; they want to be loved. And, people want to be able to rely upon others. No one wants to be left all alone to navigate life in this world; everyone wants some faithful people in their lives.

Love and faithfulness are expressions of God’s character. When we invite Him to help us be loving and faithful in our commitments, He is more than glad to jump into our relationships with us. He delights to show Himself to His sons and daughters who want to live in communion with Him and in accord with His ways.

Are you living in God’s love and faithfulness? Might you need to freshen up some of your connections and expressions of love? Are there any commitments or assignments you need God’s help to bring to completion? He is with you to express His Kingdom.
