How to Behave Like a Good King

When I was very young my older brother and I loved to play King.  We would make card castles, and we would drape blankets over our shoulders.  We’d throw cards at each other’s castles until we eventually destroyed them.  Then we would traipse around with our blanket-trains following us, declaring that we were the conquering kings.

There is something deep inside our beings that loves the idea of kings and kingdoms.

A time is coming when, “the kingdoms of this world will become the Kingdom of our Lord and His Messiah, and He will reign forever and ever.” (Revelation 11:15)  Jesus is the King of kings and the Lord of lords; every knee in heaven and on earth and below the earth will bow before Him. (Philippians 2:10)  He is the Benevolent Ruler who gives life, rather than takes it.  He fights to free people, not conquer them.  He is the One who provides for His people, rather than receives provision from them.  His kingdom is one of life, not death; health, not sickness; hope, not doubt; love, not fear; and community, not isolation.

Have you caught a glimpse of King Jesus – the resurrected and ascended Son of Man?  Have you experienced the desire to worship Him with all that you are and obey Him with your life?  Have you tasted and seen that His Kingdom is good, and His ways are always redemptive, refreshing and clean?  Have you experienced His love and forgiveness in such a way that you are willing to do almost anything for Him?  If you have experienced these things, then you have at least been touched by the love of God.  Such love transforms our purposes in life.

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13).  To be a Christian is to “see” the King, to experience the Kingdom, and to lay down your life in order that  those you love might be brought from the dominion of darkness [and hiding] into the Kingdom of the Son whom the Father loves. (Colossians 1:13)

  • Do you need to see Him more fully?

Start to declare His greatness and worship Him more.

  • Do you want to experience His Kingdom rule in your life?

          Obey His word and leading.

  • Do you want to see your friends know Him, too?

Pray for and serve them as God directs.  Lay down your pride and become a servant.
