What Is Taking Root In You?

What is presently growing in the garden of your soul? Are there weeds that need to be removed – that are choking you deep within? Are there sprouts of life and truth that need to be nurtured inside you?

The Word of God is an incredible and indispensable resource for Kingdom growth. It is a foundational source of spiritual life. God miraculously led the Israelites through the desert for forty years to challenge and teach them that “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” (Deuteronomy 8:3)

Jesus made it clear in the parable of the sower that the word of God is like seed that grows within our souls. (Luke 8:11) It convicts, corrects and transforms us as we intentionally prioritize understanding it and applying it in our lives over time. It sinks deeply into our conscious and subconscious perception of life.

This is not just an intellectual exercise, it is spiritual. It involves turning from things and activities that are snaring our souls – the things that catch us up and imprison our attention. The apostle James, as if writing to us today said, “Get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.” (James 1:21) The word of God – that seed planted in your soul – can save you from the snares and bondages of life.

The seed of the word of God grows in us when we:

  • Receive the word for what it is – “Not as human words, but as it actually is the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.” (1 Thessalonians 2:13) It comes into our spirits and works in and on us. (Hebrews 4:12)
  • Agree with the word – Don’t fight it; receive it as true. A powerful way to do this is to personalize verses that you believe apply to your situation and proclaim them over your life. This intertwined prayer and proclamation carries Kingdom power that can transform you and your circumstances.
  • Conform your life – your understanding and practice – to the truth of Scripture. Where the truth of God and your life don’t match up, make changes. Be willing to allow God to rule in your life and future by obeying Him.

Why not take some time (or possibly schedule some) and do some fresh weeding and planting in your soul? May the life of God grow richly and healthily within you!
